Do you actually need to register?
GST registration becomes mandatory once your aggregate turnover crosses the applicable threshold for your category of supply, or if you supply inter-state, sell through e-commerce, or fall under a category requiring compulsory registration regardless of turnover. Many new Coimbatore traders register before they’re required to, simply because customers and marketplaces ask for a GSTIN — that’s a valid business reason, but it’s worth confirming which threshold actually applies to you before assuming you must register.
The document set that avoids a REG-03 query
Most registration delays in Coimbatore come down to one of three things: an address proof that doesn’t match the applicant’s name, a photograph that doesn’t meet the portal’s specifications, or a missing NOC when the premises is rented. Keep your PAN, Aadhaar, business address proof, a recent photograph, bank details, and (where applicable) a rent agreement with the owner’s NOC ready before you start the application — not after a query is raised.
Composition scheme: when it helps, when it doesn’t
The composition scheme trades input tax credit for a flat, lower tax rate and simpler quarterly filing. It suits small traders and manufacturers with turnover within the composition limit and largely local, B2C sales. It doesn’t suit businesses that sell inter-state, operate through e-commerce, or whose customers need to claim input tax credit on their purchases from you — in that case, regular registration usually serves you better despite the extra compliance.
What happens after the GSTIN is issued
Registration is the start, not the finish. The first return cycle, whether monthly or under QRMP, needs to begin correctly — including any opening stock declarations and the first invoice numbering series. We hand every new registration client a short compliance calendar covering their specific filing frequency, so the first few months don’t catch anyone off guard.
Frequently asked questions
How long does GST registration take once documents are ready?
Typically 3–7 working days if there’s no clarification notice; longer if the officer raises a REG-03 query that needs a documented reply.
Can I register for GST without a commercial address?
Yes — a residential address can be used as the principal place of business for many small businesses, provided the address proof and ownership/rental documentation is in order.
